How to tame a horse for free

Leave Bloomfield by the south exit and look for the horses beyond the lake. Sneak up to one horse, pet it, and give it a foraged mushroom. Return to the same horse the following day and keep building affection until the taming interaction becomes available.

Quick guide

  1. Bring a foraged mushroom and leave room for a mount in your animal care arrangements.
  2. Sneak toward the horses south of Bloomfield; do not run into the herd.
  3. Pet and feed the same horse, then return on the next in-game day.
  4. Use the tame interaction when available, then assign your mount to the whistle through the barn’s animal book.

Find the herd south of Bloomfield

Wait until the opening tutorial lets you explore outside the village. Take the south exit, continue toward the lake, and look on its far side for the herd. This is an early exploration route; you do not need to buy a horse from the Animal Center first.

Crouch before you close the distance. Approach one horse and stay with that animal so that the affection you earn goes toward a single tameable mount. The map records animals you have discovered; use Item Search to find the herd again.

Build affection over more than one visit

  1. Pet the horse while sneaking, then hold a suitable food item from your inventory and offer it. A foraged mushroom is demonstrated in the tutorials.
  2. Check the affection feedback. Petting is limited by the daily interaction, so repeated attempts on the same day do not replace returning tomorrow.
  3. On the next day, revisit that horse, approach quietly and pet it again. Use the taming interaction once the game offers it.
  4. Bring it into your care, then open the animal book in the barn and assign the rideable animal to a whistle slot.

Both linked creators demonstrate a short pet-and-feed route. Treat the game’s tame prompt as the finish signal rather than assuming every food or every animal has the same fixed two-day requirement.

Questions & sticking points

Do I need to buy a horse?

No. The linked tutorials show wild horses that can be befriended and tamed without an adoption purchase. You still need to feed and care for the horse afterwards.
